Write a cover letter that matches your CV
How to make your cover letter reinforce the tailored resume instead of repeating it — or contradicting it.

The letter’s job is different from the CV’s
Your CV proves capability with evidence. Your cover letter explains fit: why this role, why this company, and which two or three experiences make you a credible bet.
If the letter lists every bullet again, it wastes space. If it invents a narrative the CV cannot support, it creates doubt.
A tight four-part structure
Keep most letters under one page. Hiring managers skim.
- Opening: role + one-sentence reason you are a match
- Proof: two short examples tied to the posting’s must-haves
- Motive: a specific, researched reason for this company or product
- Close: availability, courtesy, and a clear invite to talk
Align keywords and claims
Use the same role title family and skill names as your tailored CV. If the CV emphasizes experimentation and TypeScript, the letter should not pivot to a different story about pure people management unless that is also evidenced.
LuminousCV’s Application Kit drafts a cover letter beside the rewritten CV so the assets start from the same job brief. Edit both before you send.
When you can skip a letter
If the application portal marks the letter optional and the role is high-volume, a sharp tailored CV may be enough. When the posting asks for a letter, or the company is relationship-driven, send a focused one.
Put this into practice
Upload your CV and paste a job description to generate a tailored, ATS-safe draft you can edit before you apply.
